How to Make Mermaid Peg Dolls

Lots of little girls love mermaids, my two certainly do. What’s not to like, they’re pretty, they’re interesting and very different. Hence, when we suggested making mermaid peg dolls, my two girls were very excited and couldn’t wait to get started.

Mermaid peg dolls

To make the peg dolls you’ll need:

  • Pegs
  • Wool
  • Foam (ours was sticky backed and glittery)
  • Glue
  • Stickers (optional)
  • Pens and/or paint

First, we painted our pegs pink. We cut out tail shapes in the two pieces of foam and stuck them together back to back and slid the tails into the peg.

We drew a face on the top of the peg, then added the rest of the tail by colouring it and sticking little stickers/gems on it. We also added stickers for the bikini top.

Once the doll is decorated, cut strands of wool approximately 12 cm long and tie them together in the centre, then glue the bundle of hair to the top of the mermaid dolls head. We used a hot glue gun for this, to ensure it stuck well.

There you have the finished pretty mermaids. My girls were very pleased with their dolls and wanted to take them to school for show and tell.

They were very simple to make and are a great way to get creative by making pretty tails etc. You could even use them to act out a story, especially whilst reading the little mermaid, which is one of our favourite stories. A fantastic way to encourage imaginative play and have fun together.

  1. Such a cute idea, my 5 year old would love this. They’d look cute on a mobile with some fish and seaweed makes!

  2. Love these mermaid peg dolls – so pretty and what a great idea. Jessica would love these. I used to make peg dollies as a little girl and we have lots of those kinds of pegs so we will have to give these a try at some point 🙂

  3. Love these! They look relatively simple to make but very effective. I think most children would have fun making these. Great for a seaside or under the sea type topic too.
